EducationUSA Advising Center - Lilongwe

EducationUSA Lilongwe provides accurate, comprehensive and current guidance on all accredited institutions of higher education in the United States. We advise students through group sessions, academic boot camps, school and university outreach programs, fairs, individual consultations, e-mail, phone and social media. We can answer your questions about undergraduate and graduate study, the application and admission process, financing your education, qualifying for student visas, and preparing for study in the United States. Our center also welcomes U.S. university visits to Malawi and will assist in organizing sessions at schools. 

We are a free membership-based program however we require students to have attended the Basic Orientation session and be registered EducationUSA Scholars Program members if they wish to continue on with the U.S. application process through our services, or require extensive assistance with their applications.

EducationUSA Scholars Program
Description: Through the EducationUSA Scholars Program , we work with high school students through academic boot camps during end of term holidays and regular seminars to assist them throughout the application process to secure admission and scholarships for universities in the U.S. We cover topics such as selecting ‘best fit’ colleges, completing application forms, writing compelling college admission essays, preparing for standardized tests, and applying for financial aid and scholarships. EducationUSA Scholars are academically talented, participate in extra-curricular activities, are influencers, demonstrate leadership potential, and are committed to community service.
Deadline: Rolling Admission until October 1
Eligibility Requirements: 1. Scholars must be secondary school at the junior or senior level If students have already completed school, they must have graduated within two years of intended enrollment date (i.e. If applying for Fall 2018, students must have graduated in 2016) 2. Must have attended a Basic Orientation Session (held the last Thursday of every month) 3. Must be academically talented - nearly ‘1’s, ‘2’s’ and ‘3’s’ or A*s , A’s, and B+ (or grade equivalent) 4. Must have an individual consultation with the EducationUSA Adviser WITH junior and senior year secondary school reports 5. Demonstrated leadership potential or ethos of giving back
Opportunity Funds
Description: The EducationUSA Opportunity Funds program is funded by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Its purpose is to assist highly qualified students of very limited financial means with the cost of applying and getting to US universities. IT DOES NOT GRANT ACCEPTANCE OR UNIVERSITY FUNDING. Its purpose is to give all outstanding students, regardless of financial background, equal access to applying to U.S. Universities and Colleges. Students applying to the Opportunity Program expect to be eligible for scholarships and funding for tuition and living expenses from other sources. If granted, Opportunity Funds cover application costs such as test and application fees, US visa and SEVIS fees, and transportation to a U.S. university. Eligibility Requirements: 1. Must be an active EducationUSA member. 2. Must be academically qualified - marks above 75% 3. Must demonstrate lack of financial resources - proof of financial status must be provided 4. Written Personal Statement

Program Highlights

Homegrown U.S. College Fair in Lilongwe Attracts Over 500 Students
Description: Over 500 Malawian students aspiring to pursue higher education in the U.S. interacted with U.S. Embassy staff and family members, Fulbright Grantees, Peace Corps Volunteers, and Malawian alumni of U.S. colleges during the U.S. Embassy's biennial U.S. College Fair held on April 9, 2016. U.S. Ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer and Malawi's Minister of Education Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano officially opened the fair. Organized by the Public Affairs Section and EducationUSA, the 'homegrown' college fair offered a breadth of information from forty-one represented colleges and universities by volunteer alumni. This activity was a high-profile opportunity to promote U.S. higher education.
2017 WiSci Girls STEAM Camp Concludes in Malawi
Description: The 2017 Women in Science “WiSci” Girls STEAM Camp was held on the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) campus from July 30-August 14. Private sector partners, mentors and high profile guests such as Malawi’s First Lady, Dr. Gertrude Mutharika, and former NASA Astronaut Leland Melvin inspired the girls. A public-private partnership, the 2017 WiSci STEAM Camp brought together 100 secondary school girls from six African countries and the United States who worked together to enhance their science, technology, engineering, arts & design, and mathematics (STEAM) skills, develop their leadership potential, and build networks that will propel them to new opportunities in STEAM fields.
